A reliable insider has shared audience reactions from test screenings of Mortal Kombat 2 that indicate Cole Young has a "much smaller role" than he did in the first movie.

Mortal Kombat is known for its massive roster of iconic characters, from obvious front-of-box picks like Scorpion, Sub-Zero, and Liu Kang to long-term fan favourites like Johnny Cage, Raiden, and Sonya Blade. With that in mind, you'd think the 2021 movie would have an easy time picking a hero to focus on and make the star of the show.

Mortal Kombat often celebrates its history with action and horror icons, but gaming is part of that legacy too.

That wasn't really the case, though. Instead of highlighting any of Mortal Kombat's beloved fighters, the 2021 movie decided to create a brand-new character called Cole Young and make him and his literal plot armour the focal point of the narrative. As you can imagine, most fans weren't particularly happy with a newcomer taking centre stage, especially one that most considered to be bland.

While Cole Young has already been confirmed to be a part of Mortal Kombat 2, it seems that the heavy feedback towards him in the first movie has been taken on board. As pointed out by Redditor SpeedForce2022 on the Mortal Kombat subreddit, reliable movie insider DanielRPK recently shared a summary of some audience reactions to a test screening of Mortal Kombat 2.

According to DanielRPK, the reception to the long-awaited sequel is that it's a "massive improvement" over the first movie that improves upon pretty much everything, from the fight scenes and gore to the characters and story. One of the most interesting reveals from the audience reactions, though, is that Cole Young has a "much smaller role" this time around.

Cole Young, the lead from the first film, has a much smaller role this time. Instead, Karl Urban’s Johnny Cage and Adeline Rudolph’s Kitana take center stage, and I hear they’re both fantastic. - DanielRPK

It seems like Karl Urban's take on Johnny Cage and Adeline Rudolph's Kitana are instead the main characters of the sequel, which makes a lot of sense considering how important the two are to Mortal Kombat as a whole. It's not clear how Cole Young will play into Mortal Kombat 2 if he's not the main character but his reduced focus is sure to be good news to anyone who didn't gel with him in the first movie.

Hitman: World of Assassination was basically made like an early access game.

Cole Young is equal to Kobra.

His literal power was plot armor. With so many characters and over 30yrs of games why not use the characters

People who thought Cole Young should not be a protagonist of the first movie aren't true fans of MK series. Most characters origins were bland. The only exciting stories had nothing to do with their origins. MK movie 1 was a Cole Young origin movie. A proper intro into the MK cinema universe.

Bro, when mortal kombat came out it started out with the lowest bar possible for expectations. It honestly didn't take much to impress people and this late into the games lore building Cole is the most boring generic Kung fu man to ever come out of the series. People who complain about shujinko being generic and detrimental to the time line of mortal kombat don't hold a candle to how poorly written Cole Young is as the generic chosen hero who doesn't really do much to earn the title. He's so bad, I had to make an account for something for the first time in a decade just to call out how much of a bad take this is. At least conceptually shujinko is pretty cool.

You are not a fan of MK without telling me you are not a fan of MK

Such a non-argument.

"They were usually bad, so bad is okay" sounds like cope.

Cole Young sucked, period.

The story and dynamic between Bi-Han and Hanzo was amazing and it was the only thing that movie had going for it.

The casting of Shang Tsung and Raiden also sucked.

Valkyrae says that she saw Jason Momoa "mistreat" the Minecraft movie crew when she was filming her cameo.

A terrible song for a terrible movie.

More Resident Evil movies are on the way, but what will they do differently?

Here's hoping it's more than just sequels and reboots from now on.

Twisters has a great cast, but it's mostly a bunch of leads playing second fiddle to Glen Powell

There's not going to be any Sonic-style tweaking this time.
