MS State claws back, earns series win over No. 2 LSU
BATON ROUGE, La. - The Mississippi State Bulldogs earned their second comeback win in as many days, as they took game three over the LSU Tigers by a score of 14-13. The Diamond Dawgs bounced back after being down nine runs, which is the largest comeback under Head Coach Chris Lemonis.
The bats were hot for the Dawgs today, as they picked up sixteen hits as a team. David Mershon picked up a career-high in hits, as he went 4-for-5 and reached twice on walks. Mershon also led the team in runs scored in Sunday's game, crossing the plate three times. Dakota Jordan led the team in RBIs, picking up five on a 3-for-5 day at the plate. Hunter Hines finished 2-for-6 in the contest, driving in three runs. Luke Hancock and Amani Larry both had two hit days as well. Larry and Hancock also picked up two walks a piece, while Larry reached a fifth time on a hit-by-pitch.
For the Dawgs to make such a comeback, the pitching had to limit the second-ranked team in the country. Throughout the final six innings, the Tigers picked up just two hits. Tyler Davis started the run for the Dawgs, as he pitched his longest scoreless appearance of the season. Davis faced 14 batters in four complete innings, picking up two strikeouts and allowing only two hits. Aaron Nixon earned his second victory after he shut the LSU bats down. Nixon entered in the ninth and held LSU hitless through two innings.
