Aug 08, 2023Seven times Mortal Kombat characters guest starred in other games
There are 11 mainline Mortal Kombat titles, one more on the way, and a handful of non-fighting game entries under the franchise banner, and still the likes of Scorpion, Raiden, Sub-Zero and others have made their way (often secretly) into other games.
That's the subject of PNDKM's latest video as they cover no fewer than seven times the stars of Mortal Kombat guest starred in other properties.
From Scorpion with a machine gun, Reptile with a basketball, and Raiden with a football, getting the red-hot characters of the controversial MK series in your game was a great way to sprinkle a little extra intrigue to lure in audiences with, but this didn't always go over well.
As we learn from Ketchup in the video, the first three MK ninjas (Scorpion, Sub-Zero, and Reptile) along with Raiden could be unlocked in early versions of Midway's NBA Jam, but this didn't last all that long.
Speculations of Mortal Kombat crossovers with other major fighting games like the Street Fighter franchise pop up in FGC conversation all the time, and often end with something along the lines of, "That would be cool, but will the owner of the other characters be okay with their figures being ripped limb from limb during Fatality sequences?"
Mortal Kombat inspired the ESRB ratings system and has long since been associated with over the top violence and gore. For companies that want to remain as family friendly as possible, associations with the brand can often be a negative, and that's just how the NBA felt when they started seeing Scorp, Sub, and Reptile throwing elbows with the NBA stars of the early 1990's.
The ability to unlock these characters was removed from later versions of NBA Jam as a consequence, though it seems the NFL and MLB were a little more lax a few years later.
Check out the full video below to find out about all seven guest appearances (none of them are the Injustice crossovers, by the way) and let us know if any or all of these were news to you.
